Mountain Biking and Brewpubs

MTBと信州の地ビール(東御市/信濃町)

English |  Japanese

While out enjoying Nagano’s extraordinary nature on your mountain bike, take a tip from me, an avid single tracker: all that sweat and dust means you’re earning your reward for at ride’s end – a deep, rich microbrew and a hearty meal at a brewpub.

Nagano is doubly blessed with spectacular mountains and the ‘nectar of the gods’: microbrews. Life is simply too short not to enjoy the great outdoors in Shinshuu. It’s also too short to drink Bud or Asahi. Give me a Yona Yona Ale (Karuizawa) or a Miyama Blonde (Shiga Kogen) any day. The best way to enjoy a microbrew is at a brewpub, especially after a day of hitting the pedals on a mountain bike. Here are two recommendations:

*Restaurant Oh!La!Ho, Tomi City, featuring Oh!La!Ho Beer
Located on a hill overlooking Tomi City with Utsukushi-ga-hara in the distance, this brewery and restaurant (and onsen, too, for soaking your aches away) complex is a great way to end a day of mountain biking at Sugadaira Highlands. The mainstay beers of award-winning Oh!La!Ho (the name is local slang for “us” or “our place”) include Asama Mountain Range Amber Ale and Chikuma River Sketch Golden Ale. They also offer seasonal beers and fruity specialty brews. You can enjoy them at the adjacent restaurant, which specializes in creative Western dishes using local ingredients, like mushrooms, trout, wild vegetables, and locally-raised chicken. Shinshu-Miso and Tomi-Walnut Pizza, anyone?

*Shinano Brewery Restaurant Chestnut Pub, Kurohime
Some of Nagano’s best mountain biking terrain is at Kurohime, and some of the best microbrews are by Shinano Brewery. The brewery started making beers in 1996, making it one of the oldest in Nagano. Production is limited to around 60 kilo-liters a year, so it is truly a craft beer. In order from lightest to darkest, the year-round beers are Shinano Ale, Mountain Ale, Dragon Ale, and Kurohime Stout with seasonal brews as well. The brewery has a “No Waste” policy, and bakes the used malt into bread. The restaurant has a variety of pub food which is enhanced by the warm wood construction. Or you can eat out on their patio deck.

So, after riding your mountain bike around the logging roads of Sugadaira Mountain, kick back with an Oh!La!Ho porter and watch the sun go down over the Chikuma River valley. Or after enjoying pedaling through the forests of the Kurohime highlands, reward yourself with a glass of Kurohime Stout and a bowl of Shinano Beef Beer Stew while breathing in the energizing scent of the surrounding evergreen trees. And you’ll think to yourself, “This is what I came to Nagano for.”
